With an average annual economic growth of 5%, the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is one of the
most dynamic regions in the world. Its consumer market of
over 620 million people – larger than in the United States or
the European Union – and fast-growing middle-class provides
many opportunities for German companies.
It is with this background that the Baden-Württemberg
IHKs and the German Foreign Chambers of Commerce (AHKs)
in ASEAN holds the ASEAN Insights event on March 28 at the
Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Germany. The
event provided first-hand information on the region’s current
economic development as well as on business opportunities
for German companies.
Opening remarks were given by Mr. Peter Alexander
Trettin, Chairman of the IHK Foreign Trade Committee and
Vice President of Daimler AG, followed by Mr. Jan Rönnfeld,
Managing Director of AHK Indonesia, also known as EKONID.
During the event, several topics were in focus. These
include the production and supply chain for the automotive
industry, trade policies of the countries that comprise ASEAN,
and issues surrounding the field of mechanical engineering.
Keynote speeches were delivered by Mr. Arthur P. Tugade,
Secretary of Transportation at the Republic of the Philippines
Department of Transportation, and Ms. Theresa Schopper,
State Secretary at the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg.
The event ended with parallel country briefings from the
Managing Directors of each AHKs operating in the seven
ASEAN countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam,
the Philippines, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand.
