ANNUAL REPORT
2011
Knowing that a switch is difficult to realise without
market pull mechanism, CBI also regularly participates in
various events and exhibitions where natural dye batik
products from the SMEs can be displayed and sold. While
a standard quality control is in place, the experience has
been good for both the CBI team and the SMEs as many
feedbacks from the customers are taken into account
to further improve the batik products. The sales itself
has been a very strong incentive for SMEs that are still
reluctant to make the switch to natural dyes. Knowing
that their peers have reaped financial benefits from
selling their products in CBI exhibitions, a good number
of SMEs in both Cirebon and Pekalongan have now
partially switched part of their production using natural
dyes. Some SMEs are so committed to the cause that they
have negotiated with the local traditional market to keep
whatever organic wastes for their natural dye production.
In order for all this momentum to keep going, CBI has also
been concerned on how to make the program sustainable
once it leaves the region. A number of policy dialogues
both in a formal and informal setting have been initiated
to highlight successes of the program and what roles
government can play to bring it to the next level to even
wider number of batik SMEs. Different actors and point
of view have been brought together in order for the local
authorities to understand the real issues and possible
solutions to the existing situations and conditions. If
these efforts succeed, then the batik industry can look
forward to greener credentials that can truly be the pride
of Indonesia.
