ANGELA MERKEL
visits Indonesia
The first state visit of Chancellor of the Federal
Republic of Germany, Dr. Angela Merkel, to Indonesia
since she took office as Chancellor in 2005 marked
the 60 years bilateral relationship between Indonesia
and Germany. It is also seen as a reflection of the
positive developments in Indonesia, its increasing role
of the world stage and the desire to further improve
the German-Indonesian relations, especially the field
of economic cooperation. The two leaders expressed
their aim to increase the value of the trade volume
between Germany and Indonesia from US$ 7 billion in
2012 to US$ 12 billion by 2015.
“Indonesia’s development has proceeded at a very fast
and positive pace, when I look back at its conditions 17
years ago,” Merkel said, comparing this visit with her
first visit ever to Indonesia in 1995 as Germany’s then
Minister of the Environment, Natural Conservation,
and Nuclear Safety.
In the “Jakarta Declaration”, signed during the two-
day state visit, the two countries have agreed to step
up their political, economic and cultural relations.
“The intention”, said the Chancellor, “is to develop a
strategic partnership jointly shaping the international
agenda and architecture and contributing positively
and responsibly to global causes of common concern
and interests”.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono addressed the
importance of Merkel’s visit to Jakarta, saying that her
visit has beenmarkedby agreement for comprehensive
partnership. ”I am glad for the positive response from
Madame Merkel. We have found concrete and real
cooperation,” cited President SBY.
