ANNUAL REPORT
2012

CBI is proud to announce that this year they have
successfully reached their target of assisting 500 batik
SMEs across 6 provinces in Indonesia, adding Tarakan
(East Borneo), Sumenep (East Java), Makassar (South
Sulawesi) and Solo (Central Java) in their portfolio of
target locations for 2012.
Started in 2010 in the framework of the EU SWITCH-
Asia grant, the Clean Batik Initiative addresses the
multi-dimensional issues found in the Indonesian batik
industry by promoting a switch from unsustainable to
sustainable patterns of development.
In 2012, the CBI team travelled all around Indonesia to 6
provinces, informing, training and exhibiting, reaching a
growing audience of batik lovers.
With no less than 88 activities implemented last year,
CBI focused on the followings:
• teaching environmentally-friendlier methods of batik
production to SMEs in the targeted regions
• enhancing the marketing of batik products by SMEs
that successfully implement cleaner production
processes
• influencing the government policies related to cleaner
production and consumption of batik.
In the project’s new destinations, CBI’s ideas were
fully embraced, resulting in concrete impacts in the
production’s methods. The still nascent batik industry in
Tarakan made a 100% switch to natural dyes!
2012 saw the completion of the Sustainable Component
of CBI with substantial outcomes. The effects measured
in terms of costs and resources savings were warmly
welcomed by the SMEs and CBI is confident that the
innovations introduced in the program will remain and
duplicate.
