Chancellor Merkel was accompanied by a large
delegation that included the state secretary for
economic affairs, Mrs. Anne-Ruth Herkes, several
parliament members, as well as a number of

representatives and journalists.
EKONID, together with KADIN, had the honor to
host a luncheon with Chancellor Merkel, President
Yudhoyono, seven of his cabinet ministers and 60 high
ranking representatives of the German-Indonesian
Business Community. This unprecedented event by
the two chambers, highlighted their partnership and
strategic role as interfaces between the political
and business community of the two countries and
contributed to new bilateral trade and investment
opportunities. The main focus of the discussion
during the luncheon by the business men was on how
to improve foreign direct investment (FDI) by German
companies to Indonesia, which has totaled “only”
US$159 million in 2011 and US$75 million in 2012. Out
of the total FDI of US$ 20 billion, Germany is ranked
14th among foreign investors in Indonesia.
Future prospects are better; as the company
representatives expressed enthusiasm for Indonesia’s
positive economic growth and revealed plans to
increase their business activities and investments in
Indonesia.
