advantage of a student competition, which was
implemented by EKONID and the Universitas Katolik
Indonesia Atma Jaya. More than 230 universities and
middle-schools throughout Java were approached to
submit their ideas under the headline “Green cities:
Solutions for the future”. In addition did the London
School of Public Relations (LSPR) Jakarta plan and
conduct a social-media campaign for the event
series, which was brought to the live event through a
communication wall where selected online content
was displayed.
A Strong Network
Through the cooperation with the Bali-based
ecoSmart hub, the exhibition was enriched with
technologies which are already available and
applied in Indonesia. German companies also took
the opportunity to display their benchmarking
technologies. Companies like PT. Robert Bosch, PT.
ThyssenKrupp Elevator Indonesia, Lucas Nülle and
Festo impressed participants with their state-of-the-
art technologies.
In addition were five German institutions present
in the exhibition. The KfW, Energy Efficiency Made
in Germany, German Water Partnership, dena,
German RETech Partnership und Renewables Made
in Germany demonstrated their projects developed
in the respective topics. Accordingly did local NGO’s
participate in the exhibition in Jakarta. The project
“Beli yang Baik“ from WWF, Newspaper craft by
Salam Rancage, Greeneration and “Youth Consumer
greeneration“ from YLKI are just some among many.
Accompanied by a student competition, the exhibition
in Jakarta also displayed the mock-ups from the
six winners of the student competition. Sutanto
Soehodho, deputy governor of Jakarta for industry,
trade and transportation said at the opening
ceremony: “Jakarta is the most progressive city in
terms of developing a modern and green city. We
welcome ideas and innovations for achieving that”.
This event series was realized within the framework
of the German Season, which was organized
by the Goethe Institut, the German embassy in
Jakarta and EKONID. Through close cooperation
between EKONID and different partners from the
educational, institutional and private sector, the
series was launched and attracted about 5,400
visitors.
The Green City Exhibition

among the young urban population about the
various environmental problems accelerated by
the rapid urbanization of Indonesia. In order to
approach the various problems, four key areas,
namely renewable energy/energy efficiency, waste
and waste-water, transport and personal solutions,
were identified. Among them, solutions were
displayed by diverse exhibits and within interactive
