to PT. Dirgantara Indonesia and PT. Regio Aviasi Industri
in Bandung to evaluate the potential for closer cooperation
in developing Indonesia’s aviation sector. The program
provided an ideal platform for the delegates to establish
contacts with local players, experts, and stakeholders, to
explore opportunities in the Indonesian market as well as
to strengthen economic and political relations between the
Bavarian Federal State and Indonesia.
Waste management
The most challenging project of the year however, was the
waste management project under the umbrella of the newly
established “Export initiative Environmental Technology”,
a program sponsored by the German Federal Ministry
for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and
Nuclear Safety (BMUB). The initiative supports projects of
German companies and institutions with the objective to
raise awareness for environmental issues and to promote the
transfer of environmental technology know-how outside of
Germany.
The first phase aimed at establishing contacts tomedium-
sized Indonesian cities and conduct fact-finding missions to
evaluate their waste management systems and interest for
cooperation. The EKONID team visited the six cities Bandar
Lampung, Banjarmasin, Manado, Samarinda, Surakarta and
Tasikmalaya. The obtained information and data contributed
to the EKONID market study on the current status of the
Indonesian waste management system.
As a direct follow up to these visits on 01 November 2016
EKONIDorganized a workshop titled “WasteManagement in
Six Fast Growing Cities”. More than 40 participants attended
the event consisting of representatives from various city
governments as well as other
related public and private
sector institutions. The six city
governments had the chance
to present their current waste
management systems and the
issues that they had been facing.
The Bandung city government
showed that bold measures
could be taken to address the
problem of littering. As part
of the workshop, the audience was divided into different
working groups. Guided by waste management experts
the participants discussed possible solutions for some of
pressing issues Indonesian cities are faced with.
To take a closer look at specific situations and demands
in three selected cities EKONID set up teams consisting
of international and local waste management experts.
Accompanied by EKONID staff members the expert teams
visited the selected cities: Banjarmasin, Surakarta and
Tasikmalaya. The objective was to get first-hand impressions
regarding the waste management in those cities for the
development of solutions in partnership with the municipal
government. Based on the findings and recommendations
of the experts, EKONID has submitted a strategy paper to
the BMUB. A follow project is currently in the planning and
scheduled to be rolled-out in the remainder of 2017.
